Making the Most of Spring in “Naptown”

Published April 1, 2022

Spending time outside is one of life’s simple pleasures. And according to a growing body of research, getting outdoors is also really good for your health. Sunshine is an important source of Vitamin D, which helps to strengthen your bones. It also increases your levels of serotonin, which tends to improve your mood. Sunshine even helps regulate your body’s Circadian Rhythm, which encourages a higher quality of sleep. So, with plenty of reasons to get outside this spring, here are a few great ways to enjoy the best the season has to offer in Indy.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail

This well-maintained walking and biking path meanders through the city for over 8.1 miles. And regardless of where you pick it up, the Cultural Trail is a great way to really immerse yourself in the city. The now-famous path takes you by Indy’s most popular landmarks and neighborhoods, including Fountain Square, Market East, and The Mass Ave Arts District. So, be sure to hit the trail for a leisurely walk or bike ride. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is a fun way to get your heart rate up and truly soak in the city. Click here for more info.

Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park

This interactive “art park” covers 100 acres of greenspace and is a big part of what makes Indianapolis so special. It’s absolutely packed with modern art and sculptures. And best of all, the art is woven into a relaxing natural environment. You’ll wander past a mixture of experimental swing sets, playful (and climbable) skeletons, and colorful arches. And a lot of the pieces are designed for your kids to play on, too. This is a one-of-a-kind destination that’s absolutely perfect for warm, sunny days, and it’s always free to visit. The Morgan Monroe State Forest

If you’re looking to go on an adventure outside of the city, the Morgan Monroe State Forest is a short drive from Indy and makes for a perfect day trip with the kids. This forest is a massive 25,000 acres and plays host to a variety of nature trails, lakes, playgrounds, and picnic areas. And if you’re feeling even more adventurous, it’s also a popular site for fishing, camping, and even panning for gold! This magical destination is a rite of passage for any Indianapolis resident. Visit their website here for more details. It’s one of the crown jewels of The Hoosier State and makes for an unforgettable Saturday with the kids.

Holcomb Gardens

There’s nothing like a good, old-fashioned day strolling through the park. And no one knows that better than Indy! Once the trees start sprouting their leaves and flowers begin to bloom, Holcomb Gardens is certainly one of the highlights. Your kids will love wandering along the canal’s footpath and bridges, and be sure to visit the bell tower and reflecting pond. Click here to learn more.

Indy Parks

Did you know that in total, the city has over 200 public parks just waiting for you to enjoy? When’s the last time you threw the frisbee around? When’s the last time you blew up a beach ball? Do your kids like to read under the shade of their favorite tree? Or maybe they prefer to scramble around on jungle gyms and swings. Indy’s public park system is a fun and free way to enjoy the nice weather and make some lasting memories. Click here for a list of Indy’s parks. Then get out there and start exploring!

When the ground starts to thaw and the weather turns more pleasant, there’s something irresistible about heading outdoors. So, when the sunshine is calling your name, take a long walk through the city, make the short drive to the forest, or explore one of the city’s 200+ parks. A world of adventure awaits. And best of all, it’s just outside your door.
